Yesterday afternoon (12/15/2015) my sister Kalyn, Ryan, and I stopped for lunch at The Ordinary Pub (Savannah, Georgia, USA) while Christmas shopping downtown. I got the Pub Mac & Cheese (creamy mac & cheese, applewood smoked bacon, chicken, sun-dried tomatoes, and baked three cheese sauce). And even though they forgot the sun-dried tomatoes, the Pub Mac & Cheese was so good I would definitely go back.
While at The Ordinary Pub I sampled Second Self’s Mole Porter from their draft list. Second Self’s Mole Porter is a 6.5% alcohol by volume (ABV) beer from Second Self Beer Company (Atlanta, Georgia, USA). This beer is brewed with California, pasilla, and chipotle chills, cinnamon, cloves, and cocoa nibs. Mole porter exhibits 27 IBUs (International Bitterness Units) and is only available on draft. Food pairing suggestions include pork or beef tacos, stews and chilis, gruyere cheese, and chocolate desserts.
BeerAdvocate lists this beer as an American Porter, ratebeer lists it as a Porter, and UNTAPPD lists it as Porter – American. Commercial description from Second Self’s website below:
“This is the first of our Second Shift series. These are one-offs we are brewing, inspired by our surroundings and past experiences.
This is our award winning chocolate porter with extra spices reminiscent of the oaxacan mole sauce. We combines California, Pasella, and Chipotle CHILIES with CINNAMON, CLOVES, and COCOA nibs to create this ROBUST porter packed with flavor to warm you up this winter.” – Second Self Beer Company
Later that night while re-watching Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope, Ryan and I split a beer from the beer stockpile (see #618 for more on beer stockpile). This was SweetWater’s Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout, an 11.2% ABV Imperial Stout aged in bourbon barrels for over 6 months from the SweetWater Brewing Company (Atlanta, Georgia, USA). All the beers from the stockpile came from Habersham Beverage (Savannah, Georgia, USA).
SweeWater’s Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout came in a 1 pint 9.4 fl oz corked and caged bottle with a picture of a bourbon barrel on the front. I couldn’t find any information on Sweetwater’s website about this beer, so everything came from the bottle and the usual beer rating websites. BeerAdvocate says this beer is a blend of barrels (Old Forester, Heaven Hill, and Jack Daniel’s).
Below I have added two commercial descriptions of this beer, one from the bottle and the other from UNTAPPD.com:
“A supremely rich full-bodied imperial stout laced with subtle notes of chocolate and bourbon from aging over six months in bourbon barrels. Multiple influences upon this robust stout will allow your palate to explore the depths and layers of this very limited release.” – SweetWater Brewing Company
“This is the second edition from the brewery’s Cork & Cage series, a high-gravity, small-batch line-up that explores the edges of classic beer styles including barrel-aged beers, sours and wild ales. Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout is a supremely rich, full-bodied imperial stout laced with subtle notes of chocolate and bourbon, acquired while aging in bourbon barrels. A big beer at 11.2%, this is the highest ABV creation SweetWater will release this year.” – UNTAPPD
