Unrelated to beer and brewing, I made my first big financial life decision yesterday and decided to finance a 2016 Toyota Corolla LE Eco. Now that we are back in the US (probably for good), it seemed having a dependable vehicle was a good idea. After this big purchase it also seemed like a good idea to have a big beer to calm my nerves, and to celebrate!
Last night (12/12/2015) I tried another beer from the stockpile (see post #618 for origins of stockpile), Founders’ Backwoods Bastard from the Founders Brewing Company out of Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. The beer stockpile is starting to dwindle slowly, but I did go by Habersham Beverage in Savannah, Georgia, USA yesterday to pick up a few more special releases. Habersham Beverage is where all the beers in the stockpile were found as well.
Founders’ Backwoods Bastard is an 11.6% alcohol by volume (ABV) ale aged in oak bourbon barrels. All three of the usual beer websites I look to for help with style guidelines agree on this beer; Beeradvocate (Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy), ratebeer (Scotch Ale), and UNTAPPD (Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy). Availability is only in November and the beer either comes in 4-packs of 12 oz bottles or on draft.
My Founders’ Backwoods Bastard came in a 12 fl oz (355 mL) bottle with a label consisting of an elderly man from the “backwoods” with a long beard and a double headed wood axe thrown over the shoulder. The label also told me that this beer was bottled on 09/30/15. I have added the short commercial description from Founders’ website below:
“Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts, a bit of earthy spice and a scintilla of dark fruit. It’s a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate.” Founders Brewing Company
